Just some small things
on: December 23, 2010, 20:45

First off, bought this app as something new to play with over the holiday break, and it's not at all what I was expecting. It's quite a bit more actually! Honestly, I was expecting just another music app… if you know what I mean. But! Ricepad has flow, something fresh to toy with.

So, I'm not going to request much, congrats on getting the app out there and I hope more people come to find it! I can't wait to see what more comes out of this, new modules, new packs, user videos, live jams, etc etc..

The few things that I'd like to see in the near future, besides for time-stretching which seems to already be a priority, is with the sampler. I realize now, at first I thought I found a bug, but the mute button only mutes the sequence. Pretty cool, but I tend to resample to a new sampler a few patterns, then play around with those. And I'd like to do some kind of glitchy muting without having to start/stop the clip. Now, the way I'm thinking this could work is a few ways. One, being an export clip to file player, or just a general option to save a clip to use in the file player, allowing me to set cue points or fade out the clip. Second just being another mute button that works as an actual mute button.

Both options would be awesome to see in your environment at some point in time.

Or! Just a thought, an automated gate module would be cool. Like, X axis would be the quantization (1/1, 1/4, 1/16, etc), while Y would be… uh, like attack/release? Kind of give it that breathing sidechain compression effect.

Thanks for taking the time to read and such, and again, nice app!

Hi,

thanks for your message.

The mute button has not a buggy behavior. It's just designed to mute only the sequencer. Some tips for messing around with muting are:

– using the clips in loop-hold mode (that stop when you release the relative buttons)

– using choke groups (clips stop each other by playing mutually exclusively, and also mute the input if the choke group is 0)

– using a "silent" clip (where silence was recorded) and combine it with the other tips, and possibly sequenced

I invite you to try them out, especially the last one ;)

I've just thought that clips may be silent by default, instead of being empty…

While I think that there's no space for another button in the sampler, I agree that another dynamics processing effect would be great.

Thanks for the quick reply,

Though those are some helpful tricks that I hadn't known, not quite what I was looking for. I'm looking to silence the the clip without actually affecting where you are in the clip/loop. All the tips given still stop the clip. But now looking at it there really wouldn't be any more room for another button, I do understand that.

But! After playing around with the sequencer with a small loop on the clip, I kind of had a cool idea. What if you had an option for each clip in the "edit clip" menu that essentially let you switch the sequencer between triggering the clip or playing the related 16th of the sequence? so each block in the sequencer would play that slice of the loop. I'm not entirely sure how much work that would involve to get it up to that point. Just a thought that popped in my head.

The silence clip won't stop your clip if you put it in another sampler (on the right) and with choke group set to 0. Also, you could make it play forever in the sequencer but trigger it only with the mute button (edit: preventively locked on either the active state or the inactive state).

I think I'm going to open a forum about tips and tricks.

Yeah the loop slicing would be great. I still have to think carefully about how to do it in a way that is easily and quickly accessible.

Ooh! One more thing. Didn't think it was worth starting a new thread for. How bout like a combination module? So you can combined two or more effects, and set the parameters (along with parameter ranges) to a single xy pad. I like to do the whole lofi formant-y noise with the decimator and wave shaper, but it'd be nice if I could have more going on the screen that just those two modules. Problem being this breaks the whole one-screen single chain format… but it's more like a chain within a chain, right?

Just throwing thoughts out there!

Happy developing and Merry Christmas!

Thanks for the tip. I think we can work it out in a way that doesn't alter the simplicity of the interface:

– let's open a "merging effects" thread in this forum where..

– ..people request groups of effects to be merged in a single module.

– if I'll receive enough requests for a particular combination I'll make it available in the list of modules

I'm planning to implement a more complex function in the future, that may also include just what you're requesting.

Merry xmas to you :)
